An historic photo view of Sunnyside, the Home of Washington Irving, Tarrytown, New York. This home started as a small, old Dutch farmhouse or cottage that was built around 1690. Irving purchased the home in 1835 and over the years made several additions to it. It was here that Irving died in 1859. Sunnyside remained in the Irving family until 1945 when it it was purchased by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. who restored the home and opened it to the public. Many of the furnishings are original to Washington Irving and other Irving family members. Sunnyside was named a National Historic Landmark in 1962 and has remained open for tours.
Washington Irving is the well known author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle and many other titles. He was one of the most popular authors of his day and said to be the first American author to make his living entirely from his writing.
Washington Irving, born April 3, 1783, New York City; died November 28, 1859, Tarrytown, New York; age 76.
Tarrytown is a village in the town of Greenburgh, Westchester County, New York.
