Washington Irving is the well known author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle and many other titles. He was one of the most popular authors of his day and said to be the first American author to make his living entirely from his writing.
Washington Irving, born April 3, 1783, New York City; died November 28, 1859, Tarrytown, New York; age 76.
The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a large cemetery of about 90 acres and includes the graves of a number of noted individuals including Andrew Carnegie and members of the Astor and Rockefeller families. The cemetery is located next to the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground which is the setting of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Sleepy Hollow is a village in the town of Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, New York.
