Below is a family biography included in The History of Rutherford County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. HENRY H. CLAYTON, M. D., is a son of Benjamin and Lockey (Quarles) Clayton, and was born in Rutherford County, December 27, 1826. His parents were born in Virginia. The father came to Tennessee from Kentucky as early as 1815. He died in 1864. Henry H. resided on the home farm with his parents and secured a good academic education. At the age of eighteen he began studying medicine in the office of J. M. Watson & J. E. Wendel, where he remained a student three years. He then took a course of lectures in the medical department of the University of Kentucky and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1849. He then returned home and practiced two years in the county and then removed to Murfreesboro, where he has met with excellent success in the practice of his profession. In June, 1849, he married Maria Helen, a native of Kentucky, who died in 1873, leaving five children: John B., Jennie M., Mary, Henry H. and William L. In 1874 Dr. Clayton married Mrs. Hattie A. Keeble. In 1861 he raised Company I, Forty-fifth Tennessee Infantry, and served as captain two years, when he was elected first surgeon and served as such on the battle field one year, and the rest of the time was hospital surgeon. He is a member of the K. of H., and A. O. U. W., and was mayor of Murfreesboro in 1877. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and is one of the ablest practitioners of the county.
