Below is a family biography included in The History of Wright County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Jehu Barnes, a successful and energetic farmer of Wood Township, Wright Co., Mo., was born in Burke County, N. C., May 18, 1817, and is a son of Zachariah and Rosa (Anshin) Barnes, who spent their lives in their native State of North Carolina. They died when Jehu was quite young, but he was reared to manhood in North Carolina, and came to Missouri in 1838, locating in St. Francois County, where he spent some time in working by the month. He there married Elizabeth B. Parkes, who was born in 1826, also in North Carolina, and by her became the father of twelve children, nine of whom are living: William M., Ann (wife of William Conley), James T., Jehu F., John, Elizabeth J. (deceased), Wesley, Lillie (wife of Smith Abshere), Alice, Mary E. and Benjamin. Jehu Barnes went to Texas in 1848, where he spent one year, then returned home, and went to California to dig gold, coming home the following year. In 1866 he came to Wright County, and located on his present farm, which consists of 200 acres, after having given considerable to his children. He and wife are among the old and highly honored citizens of the county, and since the forming of the Republican party he has been identified with its interests. His first presidential vote was cast for Henry Clay. He is a member of the Dunkard Church. During his early settlement in Missouri game was very abundant, and many deer and other wild animals fell victims to his skill as a marksman.
