Below is a family biography included in The History of Benton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. George Kieffer, lumber dealer at Cole Camp, Mo., was born on the 22d of October, 1853, in Jefferson County, N. Y. [For parents’ history see sketch of Garrett Kieffer.] Since 1868 he has been a resident of Benton County, Mo., and up to the age of twenty-seven years made his home with his mother. He secured a good common-school education in his youthful days, mostly by self application, and at the age of eighteen years began pedagoging in Morgan and Benton Counties, continuing this for several years, and during the intervals between terms was engaged in tilling the soil. In 1878 he located in Versailles, Morgan County, where he kept a restaurant for four years, and then sold out and came to Cole Camp, where he has since been engaged in the lumber business, his yard being the first establishment at Cole Camp. He keeps a large stock of all kinds of building material, and is ever ready to supply the demand of the public. He is a member of the school board, and has always worked for the advancement of educational institutions in the county. November 2, 1881, he was married in Benton County to Miss Cora Melvin, who was born in Ohio, but was reared and educated in Benton County, Mo., her father being Benjamin Melvin. Mr. and Mrs. Kieffer are the parents of three children: Gertrude, Georgia and Charles. The mother is a member of the Congregational Church.
