My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. M. FENLEY is a native of Grant County, Ky., was born September 11, 1839, and is the fifth of a family of eight children born to John W. and Mary A. (Robinson) Fenley. John W. Fenley was born in Fairfax County, Va., in 1800. He early came to Kentucky, devoted his whole life to agricultural pursuits, and died May 8, 1864. He was a gentleman of ability, and was in every respect a representative of the farming interests. His neighbors and immediate friends always found him to be an able and judicious counselor, ever ready to assist by his advice, or by his means. His gifts to charity were more than the common public knew of. Mrs. Mary A. Fenley was born in Kentucky, and was a daughter of John Robinson. W. M. Fenley was reared on his father’s farm in Grant County, Ky., and received a good education at the common schools. He read law with Col. W. S. Rankin, and was admitted to the bar in 1863. In his younger days he was engaged in the stock business, growing fine trotters and drivers successfully. In 1870 he was elected county judge of Grant County, and served one term of four years. In 1876 he moved to Covington, where he has since resided, and practiced law. In March, 1885, he was elected president of the Kenton Fire Insurance Company, which position he now fills. He was married, April 8, 1863, to Miss Carrie J. Durbin, of Madison, Ind., a daughter of Hosier and America (Sparks) Durbin. Five children have blessed their union, of whom four are living: Green D., Shirley, Joseph B. and Carrie. Mrs. Fenley is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church North. Mr. Fenley is not a member of any church, but is a Master Mason, and is politically a Democrat.
