Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

LLEWELLYN N. CRIGLER, a native of Boone County, Ky., was born December 10, 1841, and is a son of Ephraim Dutton and Elizabeth J. (Tanner) Crigler, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Boone County, Ky. Ephraim D. Crigler emigrated from Virginia to Boone County, Ky., with his father, Nicholas Crigler, about 1828, settling near Burlington, Boone Co., Ky. He was born in 1818, and is a farmer by occupation. Nicholas Crigler was in the war of 1812. Jacob Tanner, the maternal grandfather of our subject, also a native of Virginia, immigrated to Kentucky about 1810, and settled near Florence, Boone County. He, with Nicholas Crigler, were descendants of the original colony of Germans who settled in Madison County, Va., about 1650. Llewellyn N. Crigler was reared on the farm and educated at White Haven Seminary, near Union, Boone County. From 1862 to 1872 he engaged in mercantile business in Lawrenceburg and Lexington, Ky., but in the latter year removed to Covington, Kenton County, where he engaged in the wholesale liquor business with A. R. Mullins until 1880, when he formed a partnership with Robert L. Crigler, his uncle. They are the sole proprietors of Woodland Distillery, at Lexington, Ky., and also of the Buffalo Springs Distillery, Scott County, and manufacture nothing but the finest sour mash whisky, their sales amounting to $300,000 worth annually. They employ three traveling salesmen and eighteen hands in the buildings. Their store room is situated on Pike Street, Covington. Mr. Crigler owns considerable real estate in Covington and a hotel in Burlington, Ky., and is director of the Dayton Syrup Refining Company, of Dayton, Ohio. December 13, 1865, he married Miss Mary E. Hostetter, of Lexington, who bore him three children: Robert L., Wallace P. and J. Lawrence. Mr. Crigler is a Mason, a Knight Templar and a Democrat.
