Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN F. FISK, a native of Genesee County, N. Y., was born December 14, 1815, and is a son of David and Abigail (Sargeant) Fisk, natives, respectively, of Massachusetts and Vermont, and of Welsh and English origin. David Fisk, a physician, settled in Kenton County, Ky., where he practiced medicine a few years, and died at Mount Vernon, Ohio, on his way home to New York, in 1824. His wife died in Covington, Ky., in 1849. John F. Fisk arrived in Kentucky May 31, 1837, and was educated at the Freeman Carey Institute, Hamilton County, Ohio, and in 1840-41 he taught the Germantown Academy, at Germantown, Mason Co., Ky., and became principal of the Maysville Academy in 1842, remaining there until 1844. He read law under Frank Hord, of Maywilles, Ky., attended the law school at Covington, under Gov. James T. Morehead and Judge Pryor, and was admitted to the bar of Kenton County, Ky., in 1848, having practiced in 1845-46 elsewhere in Kentucky, and has since practiced the profession in Kenton County. He has been both city and county attorney, and in 1857 was elected to the State Senate, of which body he was elected speaker, which made him ex-officio Lieutenant-governor of the State. October 14, 1842, he married Miss Elizabeth S. Johnson, of Cincinnati, who was born in 1824. Seven children were born to them, viz.: Charles S., who was born August 31, 1843, is a graduate of Miami University and the Cincinnati Law School; Virginia A., Sarah C., Belle F., Robert B., John F., Jr., and Bessie S. Mr. Fisk is a member of the I. O. O. F., has been Grand Master of the State, and Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of the United States. He is a director of the First National Bank of Covington, and is connected with the following institutions: Queen City National Bank, of Cincinnati; Covington Gas Light Company, Kenton Insurance Company, Covington & Cincinnati Bridge Company, and the Covington Protestant Children’s Home, director of the Champion Coal & Towboat Company, and a trustee of the Christian Church in Covington, and was at one time president of the Covington & Cincinnati Street Railway Company.
