My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JAMES ANDREW AVERDICK was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, December 25, 1852, and is a son of Dr. H. G. and Joanna (Eagen) Averdick; the latter, a native of Ireland, came to the United States in 1848. Dr. H. G. Averdick, a native of Hanover, Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1847, settled first in Cincinnati, but in 1854 moved to Oldenburg, Franklin Co., Ind., where he lived, with the exception of the time spent as surgeon of the Thirty-fifth Indiana Veteran Volunteers, until 1865, when he resumed his residence in Indiana. The paternal grandparents of James A. Averdick were Henry H. and Gertrude (Menkhaus) Averdick; the former died in 1887 at the age of eighty-nine years. His maternal grandparents were James Eagen and Catharine Dangherty. James Eagen was a native of Moyne, County Tipperary, Ireland, and died at the age of sixty-nine; his widow, Catharine (Daugherty) Eagen, is still alive at the advanced age of eighty-seven. The subject of this sketch was educated at St. Mary’s Institute, Dayton, Ohio, and in 1874 graduated from the Ohio Medical College at Cincinnati. He then went to Batesville, Ind., for six months, after which time he settled in Covington, Ky., where he has a good practice. He was coroner of the county, in 1876, and also trustee of the city schools; he has been city physician for ten years. In July, 1874, he married Clara J. Ertel, daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Struewe) Ertel, of Indiana. Mr. Averdick is a member of the Catholic Church and a member of the C. K. of A., of which society he at one time was Supreme Trustee.
