Below is a family biography included in The History of East Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

I. M. Cox, farmer, was born in Knox County, April 21, 1837, the son of Coleman and Roxana (Foster) Cox. The father was born in Knox County, in 1798, the son of English parents, and for several years was one of the finest carpenters in the State, and erected many fine buildings throughout Knoxville and the county. He afterward became just as successful a farmer in that county, and when young was in the war of 1812. He died in 1858. The mother, now living in Union County, was born in Virginia, in 1803, the daughter of Josiah Foster, and is a Christian lady of the Baptist persuasion. Our subject was educated in the schools of Knox and Union Counties, and has always followed farming. In 1868 he moved to Jefferson County, and in 1871 to his present farm, a fine one of 260 acres, in Rocky Valley, and has made a success of it. September 2, 1863, he married Lucy, daughter of William Chapman, born in 1844, in Tennessee. Their children are Mary E., born August 3, 1864; Maggie, born January 1, 1866; J. J., born April 12, 1869; Sallie L., born August 4, 1871; Ward B., born January 9, 1873; Adelia M., born July 15, 1876, and I. N. born April 7, 1878. He and his wife are highly esteemed members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
