Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William T. Dougherty is of Irish descent, and is a son of Josiah Dougherty, who was born in Tennessee, and was married five times. His first wife, Ruth, died eighteen months after marriage; his second was Lodesca Smith, of Tennessee, a daughter of Isaac Smith; she was the mother of eight children: Martha, Nancy, Amanda, Isaac, William T., Presley G., James and Jennie D., who died in Missouri about 1857. Mr. Dougherty located in Barry County, Mo., and settled in 1844 on Washburn Prairie, where he owned 640 acres of land. After his second wife’s death, in 1857, he married Elizabeth Meadows, who died two years later without issue. He next married Elizabeth Brock, by whom he became the father of fifteen children, there being one set of triplets and two sets of twins in the family. The mother died in 1881, and one year later Mr. Dougherty married Mrs. Lucy Justice, which marriage occurred when he was eighty-two years of age, and two years later his death occurred. He was a Democrat and a deacon in the Baptist Church. He served three years in the Confederate army during the late war, was in Price’s and Shelby’s raids, and in numerous battles and skirmishes. William T. Dougherty, his son, was born in Barry County, Mo., in 1847, and was married to Elizabeth Brock, a daughter of Daniel Brock. They have one child, Irvis Cassie. In 1878, Mr. Dougherty moved to his present farm of eighty acres. He is a Democrat, and both he and wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
