William Poland is of Irish descent, and is one of seven children born to the marriage of Arthur Poland and Jennie Toal. The father was born in Ireland, but was taken to Scotland when eight years of age, and was there educated and afterward married. He and his wife came to the United States and settled on a farm in New York State, but in May, 1863, they located on a farm near Antrim, Mich., where they resided until his death, which occurred in 1871, at the age of seventy-one years. He was a Roman Catholic in his religious views, and a Democrat in politics. His children are Isabel, Arthur, Jennie, Sarah, Charles, John and William, all born in Scotland except William, who was born in Manchester, Ontario Co., N. Y., in 1858. He (William) was educated in the common schools, and was reared on a farm. At the age of twelve years he went to Lansing, Mich., where he worked in a sash and door factory for eleven years. In 1881, on the 7th day of August, Mr. Poland married Alice, daughter of Joseph and Harriet (Loomis) Cochrane, and by her is the father of two children, Mark and Carl. Mr. Poland came to Missouri in March, 1884, and bought a farm of eighty acres in Newton County, where he located and still resides. He is neutral in politics, and in religious views is a Catholic.
