Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. William E. Brown is a son of Daniel Brown, one of the old pioneers of Newton County [see sketch of S. E. Brown], and was born on his father’s farm in Newton County in 1855. His early education was limited, owing to the breaking out of the war, and to their removal to Texas for safety. He was married in 1879 to Mehissie LeGrand, a daughter of John W. and Susan (Pace) LeGrand, and three children have blessed their union: Nora E., Clarence S. and William Leo. Since 1880 Mr. Brown has owned his present farm of ninety acres which is well situated and in a good state of cultivation. He is a Democrat in politics, and is a Presbyterian in his religious views, being a deacon in that church. Mr. Brown is an honest and industrious farmer, attending strictly to his own affairs. He has not been one day’s journey from home since be was twenty-one years of age, and has only been to the county seat twice since coming to Newton County in 1883.
