Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Robert H. Douthitt is a son of Berton and Matilda A. (Clark) Douthitt. The father was born in North Carolina, and when a young man of eighteen years came to Newton County, Mo., and purchased government land in Van Buren Township, on which he located and resided until his death. He was a member of the Christian Church, and a Democrat politically. When the war broke out he was a prosperous farmer, and at its close had nothing left but his land. During that time he was robbed of corn, wheat, oats, meat, bedding, etc., and twelve horses. After twenty years the United States Government paid his sons $200 as a slight compensation. The following named are his children: Mary E., Nancy Jane, Robert H., William A., James P., Martha A., Lucy M., Fletcher L., John E., and one child who died in infancy. Robert H. was born in 1852, and was reared on his father’s farm. He recalls many incidents of the late war, and well remembers seeing over 100 shots fired by the Union soldiers at a man by the name of Bas. Hall, who escaped with only one severe wound. Mr. Douthitt’s early education was neglected owing to the war, but since that time he has read and studied, and is well versed in business affairs. In 1874 he married Cordelia. a daughter of Jesse P. and Betsy (Dannel) Craigo, and their union has been blessed with six children: Oney B., Elsie C., Lester H., Thomas L. and Osa and Ola (twins). Mr. Douthitt purchased his present farm of eighty acres in 1882, and besides this property he owns one house and two lots in Ritchey. He is a member of the Christian Church, and a Democrat in politics.
