John Weems, a successful tiller of the soil and stock dealer, is the second child and eldest son born to Jones and Mathena (Pogue) Weems, who settled in Newton County, Mo., in 1832. Their son John was born in Greene County, Tenn., January 14, 1818, grew to manhood here, enlisted in the State service, but was discharged to stay upon the farm. While here he married Nancy Isbell, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Yates) Isbell, natives of Tennessee, and this union resulted in the birth of three sons and four daughters, named as follows: Martha (wife of Thomas Falkerson), Thomas, Jones, Mary (wife of Henry Bridge), Elizabeth (wife of John Rakestraw), William (of McDonald County), and Margaret (wife of James Robinson, of McDonald County). In 1835 Mr. Weems left his father’s home and located on Oliver’s Prairie, when this portion of Newton County was a barren looking country. In those days he was obliged to go forty miles to mill, and he can relate many interesting anecdotes connected with the early history of the county, the number of wolves, panthers, wildcats and rattlesnakes he has killed, etc. He is now in comfortable circumstances, and has a well-improved farm. His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
