Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John Henry, a resident of Newtonia Township, and the son of James and Jane (Black) Henry, was born in Blount County, Tenn., May 18, 1819. His ancestors were early settlers of Tennessee, and his father was a lieutenant in the Creek War, with Jackson, under Maj. Blue. John Henry was the ninth child born to his parents. He was reared in Tennessee, and in 1844, while in Blount County, chose for his life’s companion Miss Mary Ann Simmerley, a native of Carter County, Tenn., and the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Grindstaff) Simmerley. The ancestors on both sides of this family were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. In 1852 John Henry, with his wife and one son and three daughters, moved to Missouri, made a settlement in Newton County, and has since remained here. Three sons and four daughters were born to this union: Hester Jane, James Anderson, Martha Catherine, Rachel Emeline, Mary Elizabeth, Ake and Jacob H. During the war Mr. Henry acted as scout for the Federal army. He has ninety acres of good prairie land and forty acres of timber. He has been a member of the school board and he and family attend the Methodist Episcopal Church.
