Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. George Isbell Brown, one of the successful farmers and stock raisers of Newton County, is a son of A. H. and Lucinda (Isbell) Brown, and was born in Todd County, Ky., March 4, 1832. His paternal grandfather, John Brown, and his maternal grandfather, George Isbell, were natives of Virginia, the ancestors on both sides dating back prior to the Revolutionary War. In 1837 A. H. Brown, with his family, removed from Todd County, Ky., and located on his present farm, two miles east of Newtonia. Here George Isbell Brown, the only son of his parents, grew to manhood and assisted his father in farming. While here he married Miss Sarah A. Baynham, a native of Callaway County, Mo., and a daughter of William and Sarah A. (Irwin) Baynham, both of old Virginia stock. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have reared three sons: Dewitt C. (a farmer), William D. (a physician) and A. H., Jr. Mr. Brown started with very little means, and is now the owner of over 1,000 acres of good land. During the late war he served three years in the Confederate service. He has been assessor of one-third of the county, and also assessor of the township. He is a member of the school board and of the Masonic fraternity.
