Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. G. A. Weems was born near Greeneville, Greene Co., Tenn., November 10, 1834, and is the son of Rev. John and Martha (Guess) Weems. The Weems family are descendants of a Scotchman who settled in Maryland. There were two branches, the English and Scotch Weems. The Guess branch are descendants of John Guess, who married in Ireland, and after immigrating to the United States, settled in Tennessee. Dr. G. A. Weems reached his majority, and adopted the profession of medicine, graduating from the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery at Cincinnati, Ohio. He has been engaged in the practice of medicine for over thirty years, and during war times was a surgeon in the Confederate army, going all through the war. He sacrificed all his property during this exciting time. The Doctor was married in Newton County to Miss Elizabeth M. Lively, a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and the fruits of this union are two sons and one daughter: John M. (a minister in the Southwest Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and presiding elder of the same), David L. (a physician) and Sarah A. Dr. Weems is a member of the Southwestern Medical Society, and was instrumental in organizing Newton County Medical Society. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and has been a member of the school hoard for some time.
