Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Francis Marion Bass, a resident of Section 7, Franklin Township, was born in Fayette County, Ill., February 8, 1843, and is the son of Gilford and Polly Ann (Proctor) Bass, both natives of North Carolina. The ancestry on the father’s side were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Francis Marion Bass was reared to manhood in Illinois, and in that State chose his wife in the person of Miss Mary Hill, a daughter of Henry Hill. Mrs. Bass died and was buried in Newtonia Cemetery, leaving one child, Emma, who became the wife of Chris. Grimes. Mr. Bass then engaged in agricultural pursuits, and some years later married his second wife, Miss Jennie Gaw, the daughter of Purlina Gaw. This second union resulted in the birth of five children, one son and four daughters, viz.: Estella, Elbert, Nellie. Anna May and Hortense. Mr. Bass is a charter member of the Home Farmers’ Alliance, and he and his family worship at the Missionary Baptist Church.
