Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Constantine Dean was born in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., Penn., January 1, 1819, and is a son of William and Elizabeth (Gardner) Dean, who were of Scotch and German descent, respectively, the former a native of Scotland, and a miller by trade. Constantine Dean is one of fourteen children, and was reared in his native State. He followed milling until eighteen years of age, then went to Steubenville, Ohio, studied medicine with a Dr. Lyon, and attended lectures at the Botanical College in Cincinnati. Later he engaged in milling in that city, and at the end of five years went to Canada, but at the end of two years returned to the United States, and was engaged in the same business in Rochester, N. Y., for one year. He then resided in Beaver Falls, Penn., until 1852, at which date he married Mrs. Catherine (Woods) Smith, a native of Beaver Falls. After their marriage they moved to Freeport, Ill. (where they remained one year), thence to Dixon; then spent one year in Clinton, Iowa, two years in Scott County, Iowa, and one year in Quincy, Ill.; then resided in Brown County, Ill., until 1862, at which date Mr. Dean enlisted in the Eighty-fourth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, for three years, participating in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Rocky Face, Ringgold and Franklin. After the war he returned to Illinois, and in 1867 came to Newton County, Mo., where he has since resided. Mrs. Dean had five children by her first marriage, but none by her present husband.
