Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM APPLETON was born in Philadelphia, Penn., in March, 1820, and is the fourth in a family of fourteen children born to Christopher and Elizabeth (Hewetson) Appleton, natives of England. Christopher Appleton, a son of George Appleton, was born in London in 1791, was a merchant, immigrated to America in 1817, and died in California in 1860; he was an Episcopalian in religion. William Appleton remained with his parents in New York until nineteen years of age, when he settled in Boone County, Ky., and engaged in distilling, farming and merchandising; he owns 214 acres of land in the Ohio Valley. In 1843 he married Miss Mary M. Snyder, of Boone County, daughter of William Snyder, the latter a Virginian, and the owner of the Petersburg distillery and flouring-mill. Four children were born to this union, viz.: William H., Elizabeth, Fred J. and Charles H. Mrs. Appleton was born in 1826, and died in 1864 a member of the Christian Church. In 1866 Mr. Appleton married Mrs. Pauline E. Jenkins, a daughter of Joseph Morris, of Boone County, but originally from Virginia. Mrs. Appleton had two children by her first marriage: Thornton A., who died in 1864, and Charles, the latter living in Lawrenceburg, Ind. She was born in 1826, and with her husband is a member of the Christian Church.
