My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

OWEN GAINES was born near Bullittsville, Boone Co., Ky., in January, 1824, and is the third in a family of ten children, born to James and Virginia (Watts) Gaines. James Gaines, a son of George Gaines of Virginia, was born in October, 1798, was a farmer by occupation, and died in 1872, a member of the Baptist Church. His wife was born in December, 1802, and died in 1882. George Gaines’ father was Henry Gaines of Orange County, Va. The Gaineses spring from an English family, four brothers of whom came to the United States. Owen Gaines was reared on the farm, which occupation he has followed most of his life; he was engaged in the pork trade in Cincinnati, Ohio, for some time. He is the owner of 114 acres of well improved land on the Bullittsville and Dry Creek Pike in Boone County, where he lives. In 1858 he married Pauline Huey, daughter of William and Mary (Bradford) Huey, of Scott County, Ky., she was born in 1830, and is a member of the Baptist Church. To them have been born four children, viz.: Mary V., James W., Pendleton (deceased) and Amanda E. (deceased). James W. is now a practicing physician in Kansas City, Mo.
