Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CHARLES R. SLATER, M. D., was born in Boone County, Ky., January 21, 1860, and was the first of three children born to John H. and Nannie H. (Elliston) Slater. John H. Slater was born and raised in Boone County, where he has followed farming all his life. His wife, Nannie Elliston, was born and raised in Gallatin County, Ky. Charles R. Slater was reared on the farm, and received his literary education at Ghent County, Ky. In 1878 he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. Samuel M. Adams, of Boone County, and in 1881 he graduated in medicine from the Ohio Medical College, at Cincinnati, Ohio. Soon afterward he moved to Florence, began the practice of his profession, and has been constantly engaged ever since. September 27, 1881, he was married to Carrie E. Baker, a daughter of William H. and Margaret (McManama) Baker, of Boone County. To this union one son has been born — Claude Elliston. Mr. and Mrs. Slater are members of the Christian Church. Politically Mr. Slater is a Democrat.
