R. R. Garland, farmer of Nevada County, Ark., was born in Madison County, Tenn., January 7, 1841. He is the son of Rev. Thomas L. Garland (deceased), a prominent minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. His educational advantages were somewhat limited, on account of schools not being so plentiful as at the present writing; however he possessed the true elements of success, and always ready to serve his country when called upon. In September, 1865, the subject of this sketch was happily married to Miss Josie McSwain. She is a woman of noble qualities, is the mother of nine promising children, eight of whom are living with their parents, the other was married to Mr. N. F. Haltom, March, 1890.
