Below is a family biography included in Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Nevada County, Arkansas published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1890.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Eugene Hatley, a prosperous farmer and merchant of Nevada County, was born in that county June 30, 1855. His father, William C. Hatley, was a native of Tennessee, born December 13, 1829, and passed his youth on a farm. In the year 1869, he engaged in the mercantile business at Holly Springs. He emigrated with his mother from Tennessee, when only sixteen years old, and in 1851 married Miss Martha A. Parr, also a native of Tennessee. To them were born nine children, eight of whom are now living, viz.: Eugene, Mary R. (the wife of J. L. Young), Eudora A. (now Mrs. J. T. Gossett), Emma F. (Mrs. W. L. Connevey), Tapley B., Jennie (wife of R. L. Moore), Willie E.(wife of E. E. White), and Pearl A. The mother died in 1876, and the father married Miss Ann E. Christopher, in 1877. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Christopher. Eugene Hatley, the subject of this sketch, married also in 1877, the lady of his choice being Miss Lizzie B. Ware, of Arkansas, who is a daughter of John and Nannie McLaughlin Ware, and born in the year 1861. Of this union have been born five children, four of whom are living at the present time; viz.: Rolley E., Marion P., Florence and William J. Mr. and Mrs. Hatley are members of the Presbyterian Church; and he is a partner in the firm of E. Hatley & Bro., and is a most influential businessman. In 1889 he was appointed postmaster at Caney.
