Mayfield, Kentucky, Henry G. Wooldridge Monument, Mayfield Cemetery, vintage postcard, historic photo

A vintage postcard of the Colonel Henry G. Wooldridge Monument in Mayfield Cemetery, Mayfield, Kentucky. Although the large plot contains a total of eighteen monuments, only Colonel Henry G. Wooldridge is buried here. The tallest monument and the figure on horseback are of Wooldridge. All of the additional persons portrayed are family members including his mother, three sisters, four brothers, and two nieces plus a deer, fox, and his two favorite hunting dogs. A lifelong bachelor, Wooldridge began having the monuments carved in 1892 and continued until his death in 1899. Wooldridge was not a military colonel but rather is the title of an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

Today, the Woodridge Monument is the most popular tourist destination in Mayfield, Kentucky and was featured on the Ripley's Believe It or Not TV show during September, 1984.

Henry G. Wooldridge, born January 29, 1822, died May 30, 1899, age 73.
