Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Church and Street View, 1861-1865, historic photo

An historic photo view of a Church and Street View at Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The town of Shepherdstown is tied with the town of Romney as the oldest town in West Virginia; both towns were chartered in 1762. Shepherdstown was originally known as New Mecklenburg and then as simply Mecklenburg. The name was changed to Shepherd's Town in 1798 in honor of Thomas Shepherd, and finally changed to Shepherdstown after the Civil War.

This photo is from the Civil War era, 1861-1865, and was published as a stereograph view in 1880-1889.
