A historic photo view of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, Charlottesville, Virginia. Jefferson began work on the Monticello in the late 1760's when he was in his twenties and continued into the early 1770's. Jefferson continued building and making revisions to the Monticello throughout his lifetime. It was here that Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This photo is from about 1900, by Detroit Publishing Co. In one of the great ironies of history, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, two of the last surviving signers of the Declaration of Independence, both died on the the same day, July 4th, 1826, exactly fifty years to the day from July 4th, 1776.
Thomas Jefferson is buried in the Monticello Cemetery which is included on the grounds of the Monticello home.
