The Dedication of The Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, October 26, 1886, historic photo
On October 28, 1886, President Grover Cleveland led the dedication of the newly constructed Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The numerous ships in the foreground were part of a large number of sailing vessels celebrating the dedication. As part of the celebration, a lengthy parade took place in the streets of New York which resulted in the very first ticket tape parade, a spontaneous event as the parade passed the New York Stock Exchange.
Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the statue was a gift of France marking the long friendship between France and the United States that began with the American Revolutionary War. From the base of the statue to the top of the torch measures 151 feet. From the ground to the tip of the torch measures 305 feet.
This historic photograph was taken on the day of the dedication, October 28, 1886.
