Babe Ruth as an Army Private in the New York National Guard, historic photo
A photo taken on May 28, 1924 of George H. Ruth, better known as "Babe Ruth", as a newly enlisted private in the 104th Field Artillery of the New York National Guard. While Ruth was eligible for the draft during World War I, he was never called to service. Ten years into his career as a Major League Baseball player, he joined the New York National Guard. While he was never called up to active duty, he often made public appearances on behalf of the military. During World War II, he was frequently active in fund raising drives to sell War Bonds and other efforts to support the war effort.
George Herman Ruth, Jr., born February 6, 1895 at Baltimore, Maryland; died August 16, 1948 at New York City, age 53. Babe Ruth's Major League Baseball career lasted from 1914 to 1935.
