Lexington, Missouri, Lafayette County Courthouse, photo

The Lafayette County Courthouse at Lexington, Missouri. The Lafayette County courthouse was built in 1847 and is the oldest courthouse west of the Mississippi River that remains in continous use. It also has the distinction of having a cannonball embedded at the top of the column at the far left. This was a stray shot from the Civil War Battle of Lexington (also known as the Battle of the Hemp Bales) which was fought on the hills between the courthouse and the Missouri River on September 18-20, 1861. See the enlarged photo below of the column and embedded cannonball.
