Thomas N. Copeland, merchant of Clifton, Tenn., and native of Wayne County, first saw the light of day June 29, 1853. He was reared on a farm with his parents, securing a fair education in the common branches. In March, 1881, he left the paternal roof and came to Clifton and engaged in the mercantile business, in which he has continued to the present time, meeting with the success his energy and honesty merited. He keeps a fine stock of general dry goods, besides hats, boots and shoes and gents’ furnishing goods. He has a large and lucrative trade, and is one of the leading business men of Clifton. In 1874 he married Florence Ferguson, of Maury County, Tenn., who died November 27, 1885, leaving three children: Mildred Camilla, Osceolla and Lorenzo. Mr. Copeland is a stanch Republican in his political views, and is a member of the K. of H., and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His parents, Joseph M. and Sarah W. (Cypert) Copeland, are natives and residents of the county.
