William K. Lackey, an influential citizen of Lawrence County, Tenn., is a native of Giles County, born in 1844. His father was a native Tennessean and was reared on a farm, but followed teaching the greater portion of his life. The mother, whose maiden name was Flora McCollum, was born in North Carolina, and came to Tennessee with her parents when quite young. Mr. and Mrs. Lackey became the parents of four children, two of whom are yet living. The father died in 1863, and the mother six years later. Our subject resided at home until twenty-six years of age. After his mother’s death, at her request, he attended school about ten months and acquired a good education. He then taught school in Tennessee and Missouri for some time, and in 1875 was united in marriage to Nannie M. Spencer, daughter of A. J. and M. E. (Wayland) Spencer. Mrs. Lackey was born in Tennessee, in 1859. Her grandfather, S. H. Wayland, was the founder, and at one time the owner, of the noted Wayland Springs. Our subject and his wife are the parents of three children: Minnie L., William P. and Ida. In 1880 Mr. Lackey purchased his present farm, consisting of seventy-five acres of fairly improved land. In 1883 he was elected county superintendent of Lawrence County, and is holding the position at the present time. He is a Democrat in politics and cast his first presidential vote for S. J. Tilden.
