Jasper A. Bates, chairman of the county court and native of Hickman County, Tenn., was born on Beaver Dam Creek, near Whitfield, Hickman County, January 15, 1848, and is the second of five children born to the marriage of Lewis Bates and Agnes E. Lancaster, who were born in Hickman County in 1825 and 1828, respectively. Jasper A.’s early education was obtained in the common schools. He chose farming for an occupation, and continued the same until 1871, when he removed to Linden, Perry County, and engaged in general merchandising. Two years later he came to Centreville, and here has since resided. In September, 1874, he entered the Lebanon Law School, from which he graduated in 1875, and has since practiced in Centreville. He was elected chairman of the county court in January, 1883, and has since held the office, to the satisfaction of all. He is a Democrat and cast his first presidential vote for Horace Greeley. May 3, 1876, he was married to Cordelia E. Clagett, daughter of William G. Clagett. Mrs. Bates was born in 1851, and four children have been born to her union with Mr. Bates: Florence O., William C, Douglas T. and Owen L. Mr. Bates is a Mason, a prominent man and leading politician of Hickman County. Mrs. Bates is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
