James M. Meacham is a native of Williamson County, Tenn., born June 6, 1838, son of Green and Elizabeth (Cowan) Meacham, and of Scotch-Irish origin. His father was born in Virginia, in 1802, and his mother in North Carolina, in 1808. The family emigrated from Virginia to Tennessee, about 1806, and settled in Williamson County, and there both parents died, the father in 1851 and the mother in 1849. James M. is the sixth of seven children, and spent his youthful days following the pursuits of a farmer’s boy. His early school days were limited, but owing to his own exertions he is well informed on the general topics of the day, and is one of the finest business men of Tennessee. He came to Pinewood in 1857, and entered the employ of R. & S. Graham, as salesman in a general merchandise store, and two years later was made book-keeper, and subsequently general manager of the extensive business of S. Graham, at Pinewood, and has been in that gentleman’s employ for over twenty-nine years. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Lucy Cameron, of Columbia, Tenn., who died in 1870, leaving two children: Cowan C. and Eddie J. In 1872 Mr. Meacham married Alice Baker, who died in 1873. He remained single until 1880, when he united his fortunes with those of Fannie Baker, of Maury County, Tenn. Two children have blessed their union: Marion B. and Fannie G. Mr. Meacham is an Independent in politics and was a Union man during the late war. He and wife are leading members of the Christian Church and prominent people of the county.
