Campbell Slayden, M. D., a leading citizen of Hickman County, Tenn., was born on the 30th of April, 1827, and is a son of William E. and Rosa (Shelton) Slayden. The family are of English origin, and both parents are natives of the Old Dominion. They came to Tennessee about 1813, and settled in Dixon County, where the father followed the mechanic’s trade and wagon-making for many years. He died in 1861, and his wife in 1854. The early years of Dr. Slayden were spent on the home farm and in attending the schools of his native county. At the age of twenty-one years he began the study of medicine, and first attended lectures at the old Medical College, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and subsequently entered the medical department of the University of Nashville, from which he graduated in 1852. He located on Harpeth River, in Davidson County, where he practiced for about three years, and the following ten years was a resident of Dixon County. Since that time he has resided in Pinewood, where his professional labors are meeting with well deserved success. He has made his own way in life, and is one of the leading physicians of his part of Tennessee. He is a Democrat and a Mason, and was married in August, 1851, to Emily Jane Anderson, of Davidson County. Seven children have blessed their union: Emma J., Rosa C., Thomas J., Addie, William C., George A. and John P. Dr. and Mrs. Slayden are members of the Christian Church.
