Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Hardeman County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Alexander White, a well known resident of the Fifth District, of English origin, was born June 4, 1823, in North Carolina. His parents were natives of the same State. They were King and Telitha White. They moved to Tennessee and engaged in farming. The father died in 1838, after which Alexander took control of the homestead, which he is managing with success up to the present. He was married February, 1847, to Mary E., daughter of W. D. and Maria Simmons. Their union resulted in the birth of Maria Jane, wife of James Pirtle; George A.; James B.; Tabitha Ann, the wife of Wm. Pirtle; Mary Emma, widow of Walter Pirtle; John H., Mathias O. (deceased), Jefferson Davis, Sarah Ann, Lucie F. and Susie E. Mr. White is a self-made man, who has accumulated his possessions by industry, economy and judicious management. He is of good social standing and highly respected. Previous to the late war he was a Whig; since that time he has been a Democrat.
