JAMES J. UPSHAW, M. D., dealer in drugs and general merchandise, is a son of James and Elinor Upshaw, natives of Virginia and Tennessee, respectively. They were married about 1842, in Limestone County, Ala., and to them was born a family of three children: George L., William E. and James J. The father died Novembers, 1858, and the mother in 1864. Our subject was born in 1858, in Giles County, received a fair education, and in 1876 began the study of medicine with Dr. James A. Bowers (deceased), of Elkton. He graduated from the University of Louisville in 1878, after which he came to Elkton, where he has remained ever since. He has had a good and lucrative practice, and was one of the county’s best physicians. In 1883 he abandoned his practice, and has since devoted all his time to his present business. In 1878 he married Violet R. Patterson, daughter of John C. and Elinor Patterson, of Giles County. The result of our subject’s marriage was the birth of two children: Louis B. and Minnie L. Dr. Upshaw is of English extraction, a Democrat, and he and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Elkton.
