J. F. Butler is a son of C. C. and Mary A. (McHaney) Butler, who were born in Rutherford County, Tenn., in 1806 and 1818 respectively. They moved to Marion County, Ill., and became the parents of seven children. The father was a farmer, and came to Gibson County, Tenn., in 1846, where he died, in March, 1857. He was a Democrat, and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. His son, J. F. Butler, was born in Marion County, Ill., December 11, 1841, and was brought to Gibson County, Tenn., when five years of age. His educational advantages were limited, and he was reared on a farm. Martha E. Shane became his wife, September 22, 1860. She died September 28, 1868, leaving one daughter. Mr. Butler married Mary Holt, in February, 1869, and of five daughters born to them two only are living. This wife died on the 23d of January, 1878, and our subject, December 20, 1880, married Mattie C. Lewis, and by her became the father of a son and daughter. Mr. Butler owns seventy acres of good farming land, and is a Democrat, and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. He has served as constable of his district eight years. His wife is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
