Newton A. Holman, of Fayette County, was born in Davie County, N. C., March 2, 1836, and is a son of Wilson and Elizabeth (Turner) Holman, both natives of North Carolina. The father was born in Iredell County February 17, 1810, and died in Itawamba County, Miss., August 17, 1847. The mother was born in Rowan County April 8, 1810, and died in Itawamba County, Miss., March 7, 1846. They married October 25, 1832, in North Carolina, and in 1845 went to Mississippi and settled in Itawamba County. The father was a farmer; he belonged to the Baptist Church, and the mother was an Episcopalian. Our subject was the third of seven children. He was educated at the Olin High School in Iredell County, N. C., then engaged in the mercantile business four years, two years at Salisbury, N. C., and two at Turnersburg, N. C. In 1866 he moved and settled in Fayette County, fourteen miles south of Somerville, and has farmed ever since. Mr. Holman began life in very limited circumstances, but now owns 270 acres of good land in Fayette County. December 22, 1859, he married Miss Sallie E. (Turner), who was born in Iredell County, N. C., August, 1840, and they have had three children—two sons and a daughter. Elizabeth O., born October 8, 1862; Wilfred L., born February 28, 1865, and Luther A., born December 29, 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Holman and their son, Luther A., are consistent members of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Holman is a Democrat, deeply interested in the party. He is a man quiet and unassuming but a true gentleman, holding the confidence of all who know him.
