John H. Hook was born in Wayne County, N. C., October 21, 1829, and is a son of Lovard and Sarah (Applewhite) Hook, both natives of North Carolina. The father was born in 1795 and died in Fayette County December, 1844. The mother was born in 1809 and died in 1883. They married in North Carolina in 1827; in 1833 they immigrated to Alabama and three years later moved to Fayette County, sixteen miles southwest of Somerville, where they died. The father was a farmer. Our subject was the oldest of nine children; he was but seven years old when his parents moved to Fayette County and, omitting the years from 1853 to 1857 which he spent in Texas and Kansas, he has since made it his home. After completing his education he commenced farming. In 1867 he came into possession of the old homestead; the original tract contained 300 acres, but by his industry he has increased it to over 800 acres. January 5, 1868, Mr. Hook married Miss Mildred Compton, born in North Carolina May 13, 1845, and died March 6, 1878. One son and three daughters were born to this marriage, one of each dead. They were Lovard E., born August 8, 1869; Ella A., born January 22, 1872; Florence M., born March 7, 1874, and Jessie H., February 16, 1876. Lovard E. died February 24, 1871, and Ella A., August 26, 1872. January 15, 1880, Mr. Hook married Miss Sophia M. Oursler, born in Fayette County February 27, 1851. They have no children. The first wife was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church; our subject and present wife are influential members of the Methodist Church and are of fine social standing.
