John E. McCorkle, a farmer, of the Ninth District, was born in Dyer County, May 17, 1839. Six of the eight children born to his parents are still living. His parents were Edwin A. and Jane McCorkle. His father was born in North Carolina, in 1799; when a boy he moved to Rutherford County, Tenn.; in 1825 spent a year in Dyer County; then returned to Rutherford County, and in 1827 moved his family, and located in Dyer County. He was a farmer, and filled the office of justice of the peace for years. He died in 1853. Mr. McCorkle’s mother’s maiden name was Thomas. She was born in Wilson County, Tenn., in 1802,and died in 1855. He was educated at the Bluff Springs and Yorkville Academies, and in 1868 married Miss Tennie, daughter of William Scott. She was born in Henderson County, Tenn., in 1850, and died in 1879. By their marriage they had four children: Ora, William, Pearl and Glenn. In 1880 he married Mary E. Cotton. She was born in Nelson County, Ky., in 1846, and they now have two children: Sophia K. and John E. Mr. McCorkle has been a good business manager, and has been successful. He owns a farm of 200 acres, four miles east of Newbern. In 1870 he was elected magistrate, and has the office still. He is a Democrat and a Mason, and both Mr. and Mrs. McCorkle belong to the Christian Church.
