J. M. Lane, a merchant and farmer, residing at Lane, Dyer Co., Tenn., was born in Van Buren County, Tenn., November 17, 1848; was one of six children, four of whom are still living. His parents were J. M. and Elizabeth Lane. The father was born in Van Buren County in 1821; married and raised his family there, and in 1855 moved to Kentucky, remaining in that State until 1862, when he moved to Obion County, Tenn. January, 1866, he moved to Dyer County, and located on the farm where J. M. Lane now lives, and died in December, 1866. His wife was also born in Van Buren County in February, 1824, and is now living with her son. Our subject, J. M. Lane, received but a limited education. He entered the mercantile business in 1871, at Lane, and still continues there. He carries a full stock of general merchandise and does a good business. In 1875 a post office was established at that place, and was called “Troy Ferry” until 1881, when it was changed to Lane, after our subject. In 1874 Mr. Lane was elected magistrate, and has since been re-elected twice. In connection with his store Mr. Lane owns a large farm and personally directs its management, and has been so successful in business as to acquire quite a handsome property. He is a Democrat and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He holds the esteem and confidence of all of his neighbors.
