H. T. Wood, druggist, of Dyersburg, Tenn., was born in Brownsville, Tenn., in 1861, and is a son of Spencer R. and Mary J. (Howell) Wood. The former was born in Alabama in 1827, and the greater part of his life was spent in merchandising. He came to Tennessee in his youth and located in Brownsville, where he was depot agent for several years. In 1864 he moved to Memphis, and in partnership with another gentleman was engaged in the wholesale and retail dry goods business. They disposed of their stock in 1870, and Mr. Wood returned to Brownsville, and the last eight years of his life were spent in raising produce of various kinds and shipping it to the South. He died in 1878. His wife was born about 1830, in North Carolina, and was brought to Tennessee when a small child. She died in 1873. Of their nine children, only two are living: Jennie T., who resides with Dr. Howell at Brownsville, and H. T., our subject, who was educated in the high school at Memphis. At the age of sixteen he began clerking in a drug store in Brownsville, continuing about three and a half years. In 1880 he hired to J. B. Wilder & Co., of Louisville. Ky., as traveling salesman for their wholesale drug establishment, and remained with them until about 1882, when he came to Dyersburg and engaged in his present business. September 4, 1883, he wedded Miss Ida M. Hays, daughter of Dr. W. P. Hays. Mrs. Wood was born in Franklin, in 1803, and is the mother of one daughter—Mabel Louise. In 1876 Mr. Wood began the study of medicine under Dr. Howell, and continued one year. He is a successful young business man and keeps the leading drug store in Dyersburg. He is a Democrat, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
