Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

R. T. D. Fouche was born in Chatham County, N. C., June 1, 1830. His father, William Fouche, was the son of Elijah and Anna Fouche, and was born in Chatham County, N. C., March 27, 1807, and died December 19, 1836. A spell of sickness when three years old caused him to be a cripple through life, and thereby had to go on crutches from a child. He was left to the care of a widowed mother at the age of six years and hence had but few advantages of an education. He made teaching his occupation, and commenced teaching at the early age of fifteen years, and was teacher and pupil alternately till he was twenty-five years of age. He continued teaching, as his principal occupation, till 1871. He was one of the census takers of his native county in 1860. He has been thrice married: first to Lovenia Cavness, on the 12th of April, 1860, who died May 6, 1863; second, he married Mrs. Mary Fitts, on the 17th of January, 1864, who died January 2, 1882; he then married Mrs. Georgiana Lay, September 27, 1883. He professed religion in the year 1850, joined the Missionary Baptist Church in the fall of 1852 and was baptized by Rev. Job Jacks. In 1866 he moved to West Tennessee and continued teaching till 1872. At the organization of Crockett County he was elected county register and continued in said office till 1882. Since that time he has been engaged in the mercantile business. In January, 1885, he was elected county superintendent of public instruction, but resigned in July following, and in July of the present year took charge of the hotel at Alamo, Tenn.
