Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. J. R. Sims, M. D., is a Haywood County Tennessean, born in 1853, son of William and Julia A. (Cooke) Sims, born in Fayette County, Tenn., October 29, 1826, and Rutherford County, Tenn., in 1837. They became the parents of eight children, five of whom are living, and are residing at Cairo, Crockett County. Their son, J. R., was educated in the district schools near his home and at the age of eighteen began teaching school, and followed that occupation six years. He then entered the office of Dr. W. T. Maclin, then of Cairo, and read medicine under his directions for two years. He then took a course of lectures in the Nashville Medical College, and later in the Eclectic Medical Institute, at Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from the same in the spring of 1883. October 29, 1874, he was married to Asenath, daughter of James A. and Sarah Avery. Mrs. Sims was born near Crockett Mills in 1852. They have five children living: Edgar E., Horace R., Nina Irene, William A. and Ida E. The Doctor has been practicing at Crockett Mills since taking his first course of lectures, and has a large and lucrative practice. He is well known and commands the confidence and esteem of all, both as a physician and citizen. He is a Democrat, and is a member of the Masonic and I. O. O. F. fraternities, being Master in the lodge of the former at Alamo. He and Mrs. Sims are members of the Christian Church.
