WILLIAM CHESS was born in 1825, and was educated at the common schools. He has followed agricultural pursuits through life, having moved, in 1833, to his present farm, on the old homestead property, eighteen of the sixty-three acres having been purchased by his father. He was married, in 1875, to Mary Ann, daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Gillmore) Lewis, and to them were born four children: Margaret G., William G., Samuel L. and John Findley. Mr. Chess is among the highly respected citizens of Green Tree borough, and has been a member of its council and on its school board. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church; politically a republican.
