Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. MATTHEW CRIDGE, real-estate owner, post office Ross, was born March 12, 1823, in Merriott, Somersetshire, England, son of John and Mary (England) Cridge. His parents were descendants of an old English family, and were related to John Churchill, who was later the duke of Marlborough. Mrs. Mary Cridge died in Pittsburgh, Nov. 3, 1876, aged eighty-four years. John Cridge died of paralysis May 4, 1850. Matthew Cridge came to America when nineteen years old, and followed his trade of pattern-maker. He has invented a number of useful articles, among them the oscillating engine. Retiring from business, he purchased a part of the old Evergreen association, of which he still holds over one hundred acres. He also built the Evergreen Narrow-Gauge railroad, and was its president two years; altogether he has been identified with Evergreen over twenty-three years. Mr. Cridge married, Dec. 24, 1844, Elizabeth, daughter of William T. Wadsworth, of Cheshire, England, who came to America in 1817; Mrs. Cridge was born in Paterson, N. J., in 1832. Mr. and Mrs. Cridge have six children living: Henry, Matthew, Edmund J., Walter, Byron and Lilly.
