Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. JAMES M. PORTER, butcher, post office Woodville, was born in 1833, of Irish descent. His grandfather, Joseph, who was a farmer and stock-dealer, married Mary Corcoran, and became the father of four sons and three daughters. Andrew C., the second son, was born in 1801, in Pickaway county, Ohio, and became a farmer. He married Sarah McQuintie, and to them were born twelve children, of whom six sons and one daughter are now living. Andrew died in 1885, his wife in 1883. Since 1813 the family have been identified with Allegheny county, Andrew having come to this county when twelve years of age. James M., the second son, was educated in the common schools, and was reared a farmer. In 1863 he was appointed by the board of directors superintendent of the farm at the Allegheny County Home, which position he satisfactorily filled for twenty-one years. He followed carpentering from 1884 to 1886, at which time he purchased his present comfortable home, and is engaged in butchering. He married, in 1855, Nancy Tribrook, who bore him one child, Nannie. His second marriage was with Martha, daughter of Thomas and Jane Drennen, of this county, and two children were born to this union: Lizzie and Harry L. Mr. Porter has served as school director. He and family are members of the U. P. Church, and he is a republican.
