JAMES C. CUBBAGE, lumber-merchant, post office Putnam, was born in this county in 1853, and is descended from one of the oldest families in this section of Allegheny county. It was about the time of the first settlement of this county that James Cubbage, with his mother and two brothers, came from Ireland and purchased some 350 acres of land in Allegheny county, then in Virginia. James was eighteen years of age when he located here; he was always a farmer, and erected buildings on the property he purchased, parts of which are yet standing. He married Jane Gillfillian, and became the father of three sons and five daughters; he died in 1852. Of his children, Joseph, who was born in 1819 on the farm purchased by his father, married Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Glass, and by her had nine children, of whom four daughters and two sons are living Joseph was a farmer, and died in 1874, aged fifty-seven years: his widow survives him, aged fifty-seven. James C. is the eldest son, and was educated at the public schools. He was a farmer previous to 1881, but since that time has been successfully engaged in lumber business and operating a planing-mill. He is a Freemason, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and is a democrat.
